Mirisata Meal Kit - Ruci Foods

Bringing you the vibrant flavours of Sri Lankan curry
Traditional Mirisata is hot, sour and deeply savoury. Our jarred version carries that same heart, with a little more depth built in. We start with the tempering mix, blooming the spices in hot oil so the base turns rounder and more fragrant, then fold through coconut milk, creamy and gently sweet, which softens the edge of the chilli and the sourness of the gorakka and thickens into a creamy sauce. It’s the heat of a Mirisata with the comfort of coconut milk.
In the box you’ll find everything you need for Sri Lankan curry and rice: a small-but-mighty jar of curry paste, a sachet of starter spices, creamy coconut milk powder, rice, and easy-to-follow instructions.
The curry paste - the heart of the kit, a carefully layered blend of coconut oil, chilli powder, roasted spices, onion, tamarind, gorakka (Garcinia cambogia), garlic and ginger, with fragrant curry leaves. It’s this delicate combination of ingredients and slow build of flavours that gives Sri Lankan cooking its signature depth, and we’ve packed all of it into one little jar.
Starter spices, the traditional tempering mix of cumin, mustard, fennel and fenugreek seeds with dried curry and pandan leaves. Bloomed in hot oil at the very start of cooking, they release the aroma and warmth that every good curry is built on.
Coconut milk is the base that ties a Sri Lankan curry together, we have included fine Sri Lankan coconut milk powder, naturally creamy, with a gentle sweetness that balances the spice.
Red fragrant rice, sourced a leading producer in Sri Lanka that invests heavily in research and sustainable farming, working hand in hand with a wide network of out-grower farmers. The result is rice that’s as wholesome as it is delicious, cleaned, and ready to cook.
Easy to follow recipe card, to make a fragrant, home-cooked meal with minimum effort. We'll be sharing recipes over time so you can cook your way through making different dishes with the one kit.
If the jar is opened before use, close tightly, store in a cool place and use within 4 weeks. Keep all the packs unopened until you need them. Once opened, use them straight away. The recipe card suggests a traditional meat curry, but the pack itself contains no meat or dairy. So, the kit is yours to make into whatever meal you like. Cooking with vegetables? Meat readily soaks up the flavour and heat as it slow-cooks, but vegetables cook faster and take on less of the spice — so start with a smaller amount of paste and adjust to taste.
Mirisata (මිරිසට) comes from miris, the Sinhala word for chilli, and it names a dish led with chilli. It's fish simmered with plenty of chilli and spice — and, in its classic form, no coconut milk at all. That's what sets a Mirisata apart from the milder, coconut-rich curries of the island; it's meant to be lean, fiery and sharp with sourness.
Malu Mirisata, meaning fish mirisata, is one of the island's best-loved fish curries — the kind of everyday dish that turns up on Sri Lankan tables morning, noon and night. On an island ringed by sea, fish has always been the main staple, and this is how it's most often made, simmered with chilli and gorakka into something fiery and tangy in equal measure.
That sourness comes from gorakka, a small tart fruit dried and soaked, then ground with chilli and spices on a stone grinder into a paste. Cooked simply with curry leaves, green chillies, garlic and pandan, it's one of the oldest and most common ways Sri Lankans cook fish.
