Sweet and sharp, soft dates and fresh lime with a gentle chilli kick and warm spice
Open the jar and it’s dark, glossy and softly set, and the aroma burst of sharp lime. Soft dates slow cooked with fresh lime, vinegar and chilli until everything melts into a spoonable chutney. The dates bring a deep, almost treacly sweetness, the lime cuts straight back through it, the vinegar sharpens the edges, and a gentle chilli warmth lifts the finish. Cardamom, clove, nutmeg and cinnamon hum quietly underneath, with garlic and ginger rounding it out. It’s sweet, then sharp, then a mild, warming kick.
This is a jar for far more than the curry table. Whisk a spoonful with a little oil for an instant salad dressing, sweet, sharp and spiced all at once, spoon it over a sharp cheddar, fold it into a wrap, or serve it beside cold cuts and cheese. It lifts a bowl of rice and curry the way a squeeze of lime does elsewhere.
We make it in small batches in Sri Lanka, a way of capturing the seasonal lime harvest and holding onto it long after the fruit is gone. Every jar is made, filled and labelled in Sri Lanka, made lovingly by the women in our factories.
Ready to eat straight from the jar — no cooking needed. Always use a clean, dry spoon. Reseal and refrigerate after opening. Once opened, keep refrigerated and use within 4 weeks.
Lime rarely stays plain in a Sri Lankan kitchen. The best-known way with it is lunu dehi, whole limes cured in salt until they turn deep and mellow, a way of preserving that keeps them intensely sharp and savoury. With added chilli and turmeric, and that is the “lime pickle” most people picture.
A chutney takes the opposite path. Fruit is slow-cooked with sugar and vinegar until it softens into something dark and jammy, sweetness and sourness held together on the same spoon rather than preserved apart.
This is the island’s favourite Date & Lime chutney, sweet-and-sharp condiments runs deep, close kin to the Malay achcharu built on a base of dates and vinegar, brought to Sri Lanka centuries ago and long since made its own. Two traditions, two techniques, one island’s knack for balancing sweet, sour and heat. Lime is one of the most moreish ways to taste that balance, and we’d love you to explore it with us.
